Mad Max Review

madmax1Mad Max came out just a couple of months ago to coincide with the hype over the recent film – but does this franchise translate well to monitors? For me the answer is a pleasantly-surprised yes and I’ll tell you why…

The graphics and presentation are everything you would expect from AAA production, with super-high quality hd textures, beautiful scenery and good sound. Although the wastelands can get a little repetitive at times its perfectly in keeping with the films so I’d say that’s fair enough. It’s also really well optimised with wide reports of most people being able to play on top settings at the golden 60fps on fairly low spec machines.

The story-line isn’t fantastic but it fits the world well and apparently has a great ending, though I must admit I haven’t reached that ending myself yet so don’t kill me if you’re disappointed. The acting and such is better than a lot of games too, although not 10/10 it’s not far behind.

The gameplay here is pretty awesome too. A sort of hybrid free-world action and set pieces draws you nicely into the game world and the action grabs you in a similar way to GTA5. And of course there’s the car battle elements – this the really unique feature for me – again nothing really new – but carried out in a cool way and with a nice control system.

So should you buy Mad Max? For me its a definite yes – but maybe not at full price… If they’d sold it to me at £20ish (what I paid on sale) I’d say that’s fair, but the originally asked £35 seems to be a rip off to me. Its not really a reflection on the game – the game itself is great – but its RRP is indicative of a nasty recent trend in PC game pricing from the AAA houses. PC gaming got so big partially because it was the cheaper more viable alternative in most cases compared to consoles… but now I’m rambling… so…

Wait for the sales but then make sure you add this one to your collection if you like either the films or just free-roaming games in general.
